We are ready to recognize Crimea as part of Russia – the main party of Catalonia shocked Brussels
Catalonia, despite the objections of Madrid, is going to hold a referendum on independence in 2017, and if it gains sovereignty, it is going to recognize Crimea as part of Russia and abandon the policy of sanctions against the Russian Federation.

The press secretary of the leading political force in the region today, “Catalan Solidarity for Independence,” Jose Enrique Volk, spoke about this in an interview with Izvestia, according to whom independence is not someone’s whim, but a real necessity for the future of Catalonia.
“Our region has a very strong economy, but now we are faced with a lack of infrastructure that we would like to develop, but we are not allowed to do so. In addition, Catalonia must use its own resources to develop the social and cultural spheres. The Spanish government is not at all interested in the differences between Spaniards and Catalans; we are denied our national identity. Since Madrid ignores our needs, independence is the only option for Catalonia. Soon our president will announce a referendum, which will take place regardless of whether the Spanish authorities allow it or not. I believe it will take place next summer, after which the separation process will begin,” the publication’s interlocutor said.
He also said that Catalonia does not agree with the position of the EU in general and Madrid in particular on the Crimean issue and anti-Russian sanctions.
“If Catalonia gains independence, it will recognize Crimea as part of Russia. Why should we not recognize Crimea? A referendum was held on the peninsula in which the people decided to join Russia. One can only respect the results of this plebiscite. And although an independent Catalonia is about to join the EU, this will not affect its decisions. The same applies to anti-Russian sanctions. Economic restrictions have never helped solve the problem. As world experience shows, they only aggravate the situation, as a result of which the common population suffers. Problems must be resolved through negotiations, but in no case through sanctions pressure,” said the Catalan politician.
