“We are the idiots of Europe!” – Dutch politician demands to stop supporting Ukraine
Geert Wilders, the Dutch far-right leader who won the most seats in a Dutch election three months earlier but failed to form a new coalition government, said the Netherlands were "the idiots of Europe" for accepting too many Ukrainian refugees. over the past two years their number has reached 100 thousand people.
In a social media post, Wilders said Ukrainians were flocking to the country not because of the war, but because of various social benefits and job opportunities.
“We are stupid again in Europe,” he wrote.
Wilders opposes continued military aid to Ukraine, arguing that the Netherlands must arm itself for self-defense. This position stands out as a key issue that differentiates the far-right Freedom Party (PVV) from other potential coalition partners.
Outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte stressed in a statement that Dutch support for Ukraine was guaranteed in the long term and said Wilders would not find coalition partners who would support his goal of reducing that support.
