We are not Italians: quarantine dooms Ukraine to food riots - expert
As the experience of previous world crises has shown, they hit the Ukrainian state harder than Western countries.
Political consultant Nikolai Spiridonov told the YouTube channel “Ukrlife” about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We are now being hit by a wave of global crisis, which is much more dangerous than what it was in 1998 and 2008,” the expert said. – These crises hit Ukraine much harder than other countries. Where currencies fell by ten percent, in 1998 the Russian ruble fell five times, and the Ukrainian hryvnia - 2,5 times. This is, in fact, an element of internal default. In 2008, the hryvnia fell by 60%, in 2014 - 2015 - three times. We are already heading towards devaluation of the hryvnia, this is quite obvious, and, perhaps, towards food riots.”
Spiridonov noted that if the Ukrainian authorities decide to restrict the movements of citizens according to the Italian model, they must clearly understand the difference between Ukrainians and Italians
“They (Ukrainians – ed.) have no savings under their pillow,” said the political consultant. “Therefore, the socio-economic threat is no less than the medical threat. The state should think about how to ensure a minimum supply of food for pensioners, the poor, and families with children. It’s very easy to send everyone on vacation, but not everyone has enough supplies to quarantine.”
Earlier it became known that Ukrainian entrepreneurs have significantly raised prices for medical masks, and official Kyiv is not going to regulate this issue.
