“We are surrounded on all sides. Putin’s sleeping cells are awakening” – Razumkov Center
Russian President Vladimir Putin is using the worsening situation in the Sea of Azov to increase socio-economic tension in Maruipol.
Nikolai Sungurovsky, director of military programs at the Razumkov Center, spoke about this in a column published by the Kyiv online publication “Apostrophe”.
According to him, Russian President Vladimir Putin has far-reaching strategic goals regarding Ukraine.
“What is he trying to achieve? By aggravating the situation in the Sea of Azov, cut off part of Ukraine’s export potential. This will cause discontent in those enterprises that operate in Mariupol. That is, we are talking about escalating the internal political situation in this region and within Ukraine as a whole. This is the tactics of his actions – pressure not only external, but also from within,” the expert claims.
He also believes that Putin sees the enemy’s weaknesses and is trying to allocate resources quite rationally.
“If the goal can be achieved with fewer forces, then he will use them. He has a group of 80 thousand people on the border with Ukraine, and there is also a group in Crimea, in Transnistria. If necessary, those sleeping cells that exist inside Ukraine will wake up; there is also a border with Belarus. We are surrounded on all sides. Those who doubt that Belarus can support such actions, I am more than sure: this will be the first gift to Putin. The ground has already been prepared there, and Lukashenko doesn’t really interfere with him,” writes Sungurovsky.
He also comes to the conclusion that Putin’s main task is not to destroy Ukraine, but to make it his satellite and not allow it into the EU and NATO.
As PolitNavigator reported, the Verkhovna Rada claims that the administration of President Poroshenko “infested with Putin’s agents”.
