This recognition was made by the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security and Defense, Sergei Pashinsky, during a round table held in Kyiv on the rearmament of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Sighing heavily, he began his speech with a reminder that Ukraine inherited a colossal arsenal from the Soviet Union, a grouping comparable to the largest armies in the world was based on its territory, and the country was one of the top five world leaders in terms of the number of weapons.
“But the foreign policy strategy chosen then led to very sad consequences,” the politician noted with a straight face. – Ukraine has traditionally been one of the ten largest arms exporters, but this export was covered exclusively by samples of Soviet weapons received from the Soviet army. Ukraine, having inherited a huge army, thoughtlessly, as of the beginning of 2014, actually destroyed this army. And the credit for this goes not only to Yanukovych, who simply cleared away the ruins that he inherited from his predecessors.”
The situation with the development of modern Ukrainian weapons is no less sad, emphasized the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security and Defense.
“During the years of independence, you can count on the fingers of one hand the number of new types of weapons developed and put into service in Ukraine,” Pashinsky summed up. – I emphasize again: on the fingers of one hand. Almost no deep modernization of Soviet equipment in service with our army has been completed. Some programs were started but abandoned halfway through. In fact, all the minimal budgetary funds that we allocated for rearmament were either stolen or used extremely ineffectively.
