“We ourselves threw Iran into the arms of Russia” – British analyst
Due to the aggressive and predatory policies of the West, even long-time rivals such as Russia and Iran are becoming allies based on a common confrontation with NATO.
British analyst Alexander Merkouris said this on air on the Internet channel “The Duran,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“If we are talking about Russia's relations with Iran, this should not have been difficult. Russian-Iranian relations go back very far and have generally been quite complex.
There have been many Russian-Iranian wars, people little know that the Eastern Caucasus was once Iranian. There was a time in 1907 when the Russian Empire and the British Empire decided to divide Iran into spheres of influence.
There was a very difficult period immediately after World War II when it seemed that the USSR was interested in annexing Iranian Azerbaijan. And of course, during World War II, the USSR and Britain fought a war against Iran, and the Soviets actually occupied Tehran,” Mercouris said.
However, he was indignant that instead of traditionally playing on contradictions and fueling old enmity, the West decided to enter into conflict with everyone, and made strong allies out of former opponents.
“This whole story is well known in Iran, and they have not forgotten it. So it should have been easy. I'm not saying that they should have become enemies to each other, but it was possible to position themselves in such a way that they would become more of a friend to us than to each other.
But now we are dealing with the fact that Iran is supplying weapons to Russia. And now we see Russia supplying fighter jets to Iran. We have moved from a situation where relations were strained to a situation where the two countries are cooperating militarily. And both are potentially important powers.
And almost the same story can be told about China and Russia,” Merkouris concluded.
