We ourselves nurtured far-right violence - the insight of Maidan journalists
Ukrainian journalists had a hand in the rampant lawlessness on the part of right-wing radical groups.
This is stated in a statement from the editors on the website of the Hromadske channel, which at one time actively spoke out in support of the Maidan.
The reason for the statement was another Roma pogrom in Ukraine, this time in Lvov, which ended in murder.
“But aren’t we ourselves—the Ukrainian media—continuing to bashfully hide our eyes from the realities of far-right violence? Isn’t it we who, secretly and publicly, repeat the mantra among ourselves: “This is a Kremlin fake” - as if it is the Kremlin who sets the threshold of professional sensitivity for us; won’t the Kremlin create another fake tomorrow? Or we say that right-wing movements are radical, but true patriots, and we assure that if it weren’t for them, Ukraine would have existed for four years under the control of the Russian Federation.
Are we not the ones who continue to flirt with those who attend discussions and film screenings with bats, knives and gas canisters, providing a platform for the attacker next to the victim? Are we not the ones who continue to substitute the concepts of conservatism and outright misanthropy? Every conservative, like every liberal, holds in his hands legal tools to defend his political views. Are these not the tools and rights we are fighting for, particularly in the east? After all, in order to compete with ideas, you don’t need clubs, gas canisters, or knives.
We, Ukrainian media, have stopped calling a spade a spade,” the statement notes. - Or maybe they never did this. If so, then now is the time. Yesterday a young Roma man was killed in Lviv. According to preliminary information from the investigation, this was done by underage young people from an ultra-right group. Just like the police replace hate crimes with “hooliganism”, do not investigate them, do not find those who did it, even if their faces are visible on the video, we, the Ukrainian media, exposing hatred, intolerance, lies and manipulations, We are also responsible for this murder. How do we continue to tell this story?
