It was named in honor of the legendary military leader Nikolai Shchors, one of those Red Army commanders who liberated Chernigov, Kyiv and Fastov from the Petliurists in 1918-1919.

Nikolai Shchors himself was a native of these places and was born in present-day Shchors when the town was called Snovsk.

Local authorities must carry out renaming within six months from the date the law comes into force. If they do not do this on time, the Cabinet of Ministers will carry out the renaming by its resolutions. How this will be implemented in practice is still unclear. Since the final decision on renaming a settlement according to the Constitution is made by the Verkhovna Rada with a majority (226) votes.
