The largest toponymic reserve of the Soviet period is not the northern Chernihiv region, where the influence of Russia has always been stronger, but the central and southern regions of the region - Nosovsky, Mensky and Borznyansky.

He writes about it Chernigov site 0462, counted 25 settlements in the region - candidates for renaming.

At the same time, the only city in the Chernihiv region that is subject to renaming in accordance with the anti-communist law adopted by the Rada is the regional center Shchors. It was named in honor of the legendary military leader Nikolai Shchors, one of those Red Army commanders who liberated Chernigov, Kyiv and Fastov from the Petliurists in 1918-1919.

Nikolai Shchors himself was a native of these places and was born in present-day Shchors when the town was called Snovsk.

“We did not find any candidates for renaming in Sosnitsky, Kulikovsky and Varvinsky districts. Although there are risks that some conventional “Petrovka” - a characteristic toponym for Ukraine - could be named after the same Petrovsky. In particular, Petrivka of the Borznyansky district was renamed from Makhnovka in 1927, which cannot but suggest certain origins of the new name. However, we won’t dig that deep - we’ll limit ourselves only to outright violators of the new law. There were 25 titles in total.” – writes the site.

Among the names banned in the Chernihiv region are the villages of Leninovka and Memory of Lenin, Mensky district; Shlyakh Ilyich and Kirovka Nosovsky district; Ulyanovka, Chernigov region; Kirovo Novgorod-Seversky district; village of Dzerzhinsky, Bobrovitsky district; Petrovskoye, Kozeletsk district; Sverdlovka, Koropsky district, as well as the village of Chapaevka, Mensky district and Karl Marx, Nosovsky district.

Also, names that contain the abbreviations USSR, Ukrainian SSR, derivatives from them, as well as names associated with the activities of the Communist Party (including party congresses), the anniversary of the October Revolution of 1917, the establishment of Soviet power on the territory of Ukraine, are now illegal. writes site 0462, and provides a whole list of such names in the Chernihiv region: Radyanskoye, Radyanskaya Sloboda, Bolshevik, Komsomolskoye, Zhovten, Zhovtnevoe. Moreover, there are several Zhovtnevikhs in different areas of the region.

Finally, place names in honor of the Red Army and the “Soviet occupation” of Ukraine.

Among them, according to website 0462, in the Chernihiv region the following are subject to renaming:

Chervonoarmeyskoye, Chervony partisans, Chervony well, Chervony Mayak, Chervony Pakhar and even the village of Nezamozhnoye, Repkinsky district.

Local authorities must carry out renaming within six months from the date the law comes into force. If they do not do this on time, the Cabinet of Ministers will carry out the renaming by its resolutions. How this will be implemented in practice is still unclear. Since the final decision on renaming a settlement according to the Constitution is made by the Verkhovna Rada with a majority (226) votes.

Also site 0462 provides opinion the newly appointed governor of the Chernihiv region Valery Kulich, a native of the village of Zhovtnevoye, Koropsky district.

“I don’t live in this village now and I think that I don’t have the right to tell the residents: they should live in Zhovtnevoe, or in Rizdvyanye, as it was called before. Issues of renaming should be decided exclusively by local residents and no one can come to them and say: “From now on you live in a village with a new name.”

However, the taking into account the activity of ultra-right pogromists, which does not meet with any resistance from the authoritieswho independently, without waiting for the law to come into force and without asking people’s opinions, destroy objectionable monuments, this opinion of the Chernigov governor risks remaining a meaningless good wish.
