This was reported by the press service of the Donetsk region prosecutor's office subordinate to Kyiv.
“On August 17, the Kramatorsk City Court granted the request of the prosecutor’s office of the Donetsk region and chose a preventive measure for the mayor of the city of Dzerzhinsk (Toretsk) Vladimir Sleptsov in the form of detention for a period of 2 months,” the message says.
The mayor is charged with “committing criminal offenses under Part 1 of Article 258-3 (participation in a terrorist group or terrorist organization) and Part 2 of Article 110 (encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.”
“I know Sleptsov from work in the Donetsk region. He was harsh in his relationships with his subordinates. But there was a result,” commented former People’s Deputy from the Party of Regions Elena Bondarenko on his arrest.
Sleptsov’s fellow party members from the Opposition Bloc assessed the case against Vladimir Sleptsov as “arbitrariness on the part of the authorities, which is systematically putting pressure on political opponents and has launched a “witch hunt” in the country.”
“Vladimir Sleptsov, one of the most authoritative mayors not only in the Donetsk region, but also in Ukraine as a whole, to whom the residents of Dzerzhinsk trusted the right to lead the government in the city five times in a row, is accused only of the fact that he chaired a meeting of the city council of the city of Dzerzhinsk in April 2014, where some deputies tried to put to a vote the question of holding a referendum on the status of the Donetsk region. This case is a continuation of the wave of arrests of opposition representatives, who are being tried to do business in the worst traditions of Soviet times. This is nothing more than an outright political order from the team that today has taken responsibility for the situation in the country, including for the observance of democratic principles,” the political force said in a statement.
