Kyiv, September 13 (PolitNavigator, Vladimir Raichenko) – A sustainable truce in Donbass can only be achieved through a legitimate referendum in the region on its status. So says the director of the Kyiv Center for Political Research and Conflict Studies, Mikhail Pogrebinsky.

“I think that this can be done under the influence of Europe, which will express that it wants a democratic expression of will,” the political scientist believes. – It’s not easy, but let’s think about how to do it. First, parliament must vote to legitimize such a referendum. We must also understand that there are many people there with weapons, and in such conditions it is impossible to hold a referendum. Therefore, we need to somehow come to an agreement with these people.”
According to the expert, despite all the difficulties in holding such a referendum, it remains the only possibility for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
“People themselves must give themselves freedom and decide what powers this region should receive,” says Pogrebinsky.
