Kyiv, October 02 (PolitNavigator, Vladimir Mikhailov) – The closure of checkpoints on the Russian-Ukrainian border in accordance with the decree of Petro Poroshenko is a blow to the economy of Ukraine and a serious complication of life for thousands of Ukrainian citizens.

Yuriy Makogon, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of International Economics at Donetsk National University, told PolitNavigator about this.

“Any restrictions in relations between two states, as in this case, the closure of a number of crossings, passages and crossings between any states on the border, are always like a double-edged dagger. They negatively affect both parties equally. This is action and reaction.

The Russian market accounts for more than one third of Ukraine's economy.

This year, starting around April-May, the situation was getting worse in our region, on the Russian-Ukrainian border between the Donetsk and Lugansk regions and the Rostov region of the Russian Federation. Instead of a border of cooperation, a border of confrontation appeared, and then of military conflict.

I would like to remind you that three years ago the Donbass Euroregion was created, which included two regions of Ukraine - Donetsk and Lugansk, and on the Russian side Rostov, and in the last six months the Voronezh region was added there.

We must also remember that at one time this was an administrative border, not a state border, simply between regions of the Soviet Union. Back then they didn’t think about what it would be like if it ever became a state border. It passes “through the living”, dividing settlements literally into parts where people live. Part of the family is on one side of the border, and the other part is on the other. Part of the infrastructure did not belong to anyone then, because it was state-owned. For example, roads, railways, a maternity hospital, a pharmacy, for example, a bakery that baked bread and was used by both sides equally. And then it did not interfere with normal life, but today it has become a problem.

And now those transitions that were created over more than twenty years of separate existence are closed, and normal communication is interrupted. This, of course, negatively affects life in general and the economy in particular,” the scientist said.
