On two chairs: The travails of a prominent “opposition figure” in Serbia
One of the leaders of the pro-Western opposition in Serbia finds himself in a difficult situation - the mayor of the city of Sabac, Nebojsa Zelenovic, wants to keep his home, but at the same time risks quarreling with his comrades in the opposition “Alliance for Serbia”, who have announced a boycott of the April elections.
At a recent press conference, Zelenovic said that the General Committee of his party “Together for Serbia” had decided to participate in the elections in the city he now heads. And this was done, according to him, at the request of “a huge number of townspeople” with the intention of “protecting normal life in Sabac.”
However, more recently, Zelenovic’s party, together with other political forces included in the opposition “Union for Serbia,” announced support for this alliance’s campaign to boycott parliamentary and local elections, which are to be held in April this year, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Zelenovich assures that an exception will be made exclusively for Sabac.
“We have a clear plan on how citizens can earn more profit,” Zelenovich showered with promises. – We have a plan to irrigate 20 hectares of fertile arable land in Machwa (region in Serbia – ed.), we have a plan to invest heavily in roads, streets, water supply and sewerage. We have a plan for how to treat people better. We have a plan on how to make people’s lives objectively better, how to improve life in our free city of Sabac.”
It is interesting that the second person in the Together for Serbia party, Srdjan Srečković, voted against such obvious double-dealing of his boss. When the majority of party members supported Zelenovic, Srečković left this political force.
