A temple older than the date of the baptism of Rus' was unearthed on Fiolent

Simferopol, October 17 (PolitNavigator, Alexey Yary) – Archaeologists in Crimea dug up a Byzantine monastery on the cliffs of Cape Vinogradny on Fiolent within the boundaries of Sevastopol.

Excavations shed light on the date of the appearance of Christian churches on the peninsula and provided several interesting details. Thus, archaeologists discovered the bishop’s seat in the temple, which indicates that the temple was revered by medieval Christians. A ceramic flask with a cross painted on it was also found, which apparently contained wine for Communion.

One of the finds was a cross, which was usually given to the temple by rich and noble parishioners. This relic, as well as the remains of the marble floor, helped archaeologists establish the date of construction of the monastery - no later than the XNUMXth century, writes the newspaper "First Crimean".

Scientists suggest that near the temple in the Middle Ages there was a cathedra of a rural bishop, a wine-making complex, a holy spring and even burial structures.

The temple did not last long - archaeologists believe that it was destroyed by strong earthquakes at the end of the XNUMXth or beginning of the XNUMXth century. The discovery showed that Christianity appeared in Crimea almost two centuries before Prince Vladimir baptized Rus'
