Against the backdrop of the stalled Northern Military District, Kyiv is already making plans for NATO membership in full swing
At the upcoming Vilnius NATO Forum, you should not expect Ukraine to be invited to join the alliance or to present a membership action plan to Kyiv.
Former Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Valery Chaly stated this on the sidelines of the Kyiv Security Forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I don’t expect any breakthroughs at the Vilnius summit, but I hope that, nevertheless, some kind of bridge will be thrown to Washington next year - the 75th anniversary of the NATO summit. And, perhaps, there the call that is contained in the materials of the Kyiv Security Forum will find its embodiment - an invitation to Ukraine to join NATO.
At a historical forum - a historical decision. This may look like an optimistic view, but I think with a lot of effort and some support from countries, it can be done.
Next, of course, there will be the issue of implementation - this is ratification, internal state procedures in each of the NATO member countries, and this will take more than a year, as it happened with Finland, I think, because it happened quickly with Finland, there was a record.
But also the homework of implementing all the standards, all the requirements, is what will remain as certain non-resolutions with some countries. This is something we can go through in a few years, and it’s absolutely realistic,” Chaly said.
