Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov announced this on his social network page.
“A criminal group consisting of acting the head of the regional customs, his two deputies, as well as the head of the customs post, tried to provide a bribe to operatives of the economic protection department in the Lviv region of the National Police and the prosecutor of the military prosecutor’s office,” he wrote.
Avakov recalled that the detained customs officers previously worked at Lviv customs. However, after the detention of one of its leaders on January 19, they were transferred to similar positions in the Carpathian Customs, where they organized an illegal “bottom-up” collection scheme.
The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasized that law enforcement officers have documented facts of bribery from the period when customs officers were in positions at Lviv customs.
“When the exposed officials realized that they would not be able to avoid responsibility, they decided to come to an agreement with law enforcement officers. The price of the issue, in their opinion, amounted to more than a million hryvnia,” Avakov specified.
On the night of March 17, during the transfer of a bribe, customs officers were detained by operatives of the Economic Protection Department in the Lviv region of the National Police together with investigators from the military prosecutor's office of the Western region.
