On Poroshenko’s channel they are crying: We are losing Merkel – “the lawyer of the interests of Ukraine”
This year will be extremely difficult for Ukraine in terms of resolving the situation in Donbass. Angela Merkel, who is leaving the post of German Chancellor, and the head of France, Emmanuel Macron, who is preparing for the presidential elections, will put pressure on Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and force him to move forward in implementing the Minsk agreements.
They need this to show the results of their work as heads of state, former deputy head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine, diplomat Konstantin Eliseev said on the Pryamoy TV channel, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“This will be a difficult year for Ukraine, because Merkel, the person who was essentially the main partner and ally in the Normandy negotiations on Donbass, is leaving. This is the only politician in the world, a leader who completely knows all the circumstances of the “Minsk agreements” and even all the nuances of the “Minsk agreements”, she has a powerful institutional memory, and of course, with her departure, my mother is losing a powerful advocate for our interests in Donbass and Crimea.
Therefore, this is a very difficult period. I do not rule out that now the Ukrainian side, in particular Zelensky, will be put under pressure so that under Merkel’s tenure he makes certain concessions on the settlement of Donbass. I do not exclude that the factor that is preparing for the presidential elections in France next year, and President Macron, will influence. And, of course, all these factors will influence the course of negotiations - both in the Normandy Format and the behavior of the Russian side,” Eliseev said.
