This was reported by the local publication “Tavriyskie Izvestia” with reference to the director of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Kherson Regional State Administration, Yuri Poputko.
These chemicals, according to the official, are stored in polyethylene barrels and reinforced concrete containers installed in open areas. According to the department’s calculations, almost UAH 93 million is needed to dispose of all unusable pesticides in the Kherson region.
“This is an unaffordable amount for the regional budget, so in April of this year the Regional State Administration turned to Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman and the people’s deputies who represent this region in the Verkhovna Rada with a request to help obtain the necessary funds from the state budget. The Department of Ecology also sent a request to the Ministry of Ecology for the allocation of funds under the program “Implementation of environmental measures,” says the official.
The publication recalls that in the village of Tomarino, Berislavsky district, Kherson region, more than 170 barrels with chemically hazardous pesticides disappeared. Some of them were stolen by local residents and used for various economic needs, the fate of the rest is unknown.
