One of Zhukov’s “sisters” died in the Kiev region
Maria Efimovna Snigir, one of the two sisters who were seen every year at the Victory Day celebrations in Kyiv, has died.
Archbishop Jonah (Cherepanov) of Obukhov announced this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Yesterday at 18:00, Snigir Maria Efimovna, one of the Zhukov Sisters, died as a result of a heart attack,” Archbishop Jonah wrote on his Facebook.
The Snigir sisters are known for coming to the Park of Glory with a large portrait of Marshal Zhukov. They were seen not only on Victory Day, but also at other celebrations related to the Great Patriotic War. The sisters collected alms and with this money, as well as their pensions, repaired monuments to liberating soldiers in the Kyiv region.
Although the sisters have long been well known to Kiev residents, this year the police tried to detain them, which caused outrage among people. According to the police, Zhukov’s portrait could not be worn to public events in accordance with the so-called. law on decommunization.
“The Zhukov Sisters” are real ascetics. They were the first to put a cross at the burial site of soldiers killed by the Nazis near the village of Gora, Boryspil region, where they lived. They remembered this place and periodically came there during the occupation.
They dedicated their entire lives to the memory of the Red Army soldiers who died during the Great Patriotic War and were buried in our region.
The last time this year they were with a portrait of Zhukov in Kyiv on June 22. They also promised to come on the day of the liberation of Kyiv,” Elena Berezhnaya, director of the Institute of Legal Policy and Social Protection, said in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
