The reputation of the West is at stake: the temptation to intervene directly is very great - American professor
The US, NATO and the entire West are destined to lose in Ukraine. At the same time, their entire reputation is at stake. Therefore, in the event that defeat is obvious, the risk of direct intervention in the conflict to try to correct the situation increases.
American political scientist, professor at the University of Chicago John Mearsheimer said this on the Deep Dive video blog, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The real chink in their armor and weapons isn't really the weapons, it's the manpower. They don't have the manpower, they're vastly outnumbered, and they don't have any meaningful mobilization plan that will allow them to solve the manpower problem. This is where the real chink in their armor lies.
But as for your question, it's a very interesting question because if you think about it, what we are doing now in Ukraine is doubling down. We are more determined than ever to ensure that the Ukrainians win. Our reputation is truly at stake.
So what happens if in two or three months the Ukrainians start to lose significantly on the battlefield and it becomes clear to almost everyone that the Russians are on the rise and the Russians are winning the war, whatever victory means?
Let's leave this aside for now, but “We are clearly in a situation where the West, NATO and the United States are destined to lose the war, given everything we have invested in Ukraine and the fact that we have just doubled down, what are we going to do then?” he said rhetorically.
“And this is an alarming situation, because the temptation to use Western military force to correct the situation, to double down again, will be a very strong temptation. And that can lead to really serious problems,” Mearsheimer concluded.
