23 law enforcement officers died on Maidan, 932 were wounded by militants – ex-commander-in-chief of internal troops
In Ukraine, 4 National Guard soldiers who died during the riots staged by nationalists near the Verkhovna Rada in August 2015 are remembered as heroes, but 23 law enforcement officers who died at the hands of the same nationalists during the riots on the Maidan are shamed.

Stanislav Shulyak, ex-commander of the internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, stated this today during interrogation in the Svyatoshinsky court of Kyiv, which is being conducted via video link.
“Both I and the defendants (five ex-fighters of the Berkut special forces - ed.) fulfilled their official duties. I don’t understand why law enforcement officers are divided: those who now defend law and order are heroes, those who defended it then are criminals,” Shulyak said.
According to him, during the riots in Kyiv from November 2013 to February 2014, 23 Interior Ministry employees were killed and another 932 were injured.
“We are not talking about scratches and abrasions, these are 257 serious wounds, and 158 are gunshot wounds. Illegal methods of influence were used against these law enforcement officers. The whole world saw their courage and heroism. Unarmed, they defended the law,” Shulyak said.
Shulyak testified as part of the trial against five former members of the Berkut special forces unit, who are accused of mass shootings in February 2014. Shulyak himself is now in Rostov. He told the court that he remains a citizen of Ukraine and lives in Simferopol.
