At a rally in Kyiv, White Maidan protesters threatened Lukashenko with increased hatred
The “Doctor Goose for Belarus!” event took place at the Belarusian Embassy in Kyiv, the purpose of which was to draw attention to the situation of the arrested Belomaidan participants in need of medical care, reports a Politnavigator correspondent.
A dozen and a half people, including members of the headquarters of the arrested Belarusian oppositionist Viktor Babariko, gathered with posters that read: “The right to treatment is a human right”, “Let doctors see political prisoners!”, “The health of a prisoner is the responsibility of the state!”, “Goose” will cure Belarus!”
The activists also brought several models of decoy geese, which were shown during the action. One of them was wearing a “medical cap” made of paper.
The speakers said that political prisoners in Belarus are not only not provided with medical care, but are also prevented from receiving it, even in cases where the state itself is to blame for the deterioration of the prisoner’s health, for example, if a person was injured during detention.
Human rights activists have prepared an appeal on this matter to the Chairman of the UN Human Rights Council Najat Shamim, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Morero, acting Head of the UN Committee against Torture Claude Geller, International President of Doctors Without Borders Christos Christ, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet and representatives of other international organizations.
At the rally it was stated that since the beginning of the protests in Belarus, about 35 thousand people have been arrested, at least 4644 people have been subjected to torture and ill-treatment by Belarusian security forces. Many prisoners have conditions that require surgery or special treatment outside of prison, such as mental illness, but are denied this. In addition, their relatives are not given the opportunity to find out what kind of help is needed.
Such violations are a crime against humanity, noted activist Alexandra Romantsova.
“That’s why today a goose for Belarus in a doctor’s uniform says that this will end in The Hague. Lukashenko, you are responsible for the implementation of international norms, human rights and international humanitarian norms,” she said.
Protest participant Alla Martynovich spoke about how she was detained and was not given the medical care she needed. According to her, she still managed to get a doctor to come to her, but the security forces forced him to write in the medical report that she was healthy, and therefore she could not receive medical care in prison. She noted that the situation with medical care has worsened - if at the beginning of the protests doctors could still be called to the Maidan protesters, now this is much more difficult to do.
“I talked to many protesters, prisoners - this situation suppresses many, but embitters many. Lukashenko himself does not understand that he is provoking, explicitly or indirectly, a war of protesters against himself. I don’t think people will be able to come to terms with this, close their eyes to it and forgive. I think there will simply be more protesters as a result of this attitude,” said Alla Martynovich.
