Ukraine spends as much on science as an average pharmaceutical company
In the state budget of Ukraine for 2020, approximately the same amount of funds is allocated for science and innovation as is allocated for the maintenance of one prosecutor’s office and as much as the average European pharmaceutical company spends on scientific research.
Economic expert Alexey Kushch stated this on the Kievan Rus TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The budget is built entirely to pay off external and internal debts. All other budget items are formed on a residual basis. For comparison: approximately 10 billion hryvnia are allocated for science and innovation, including approximately 800 million hryvnia for university science.
What is 10 billion hryvnia? This is the R&D budget of an average European pharmaceutical company. For comparison: 8 billion hryvnia are allocated for the prosecutor’s office. That is, for this state, the costs of the prosecutor’s office are approximately equal to the costs of science and innovation. With such accents of public policy in the 21st century, we will not go far,” said Kushch.
