A Russian warship was discovered on a new Ukrainian coin
The National Bank of Ukraine introduced a new commemorative coin with a face value of five hryvnia. The obverse depicts the coat of arms of Ukraine, and on the reverse on the “mov” it is written “City of Sevastopol,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This coin continues the “Regions of Ukraine” series and is dedicated to a Ukrainian city with a special status, located in the southwestern part of the Crimean Peninsula, around the unique Sevastopol Bay,” the NBU said in a statement.
However, the release of a new coin traditionally turned into a “zrada” - the picture under the inscription about Sevastopol shows the ruins of Chersonesos and a three-masted sailing ship.
Experts in the history of the fleet indicate that the ship is a combat frigate built typical of the Russian Empire before 1855.
It remains to be seen why the artists of the National Bank chose to place a drawing of an imperial ship instead of an image of a Cossack seagull boat, on which, according to legend, the Cossacks not only reached Korsun, but also raided Constantinople.
