At Saur-Mogila - a large-scale honoring of veterans and defenders of the DPR
On May 8, the foundation stone of an Orthodox chapel took place at the Saur-Mogila memorial complex with the participation of the DPR leadership.
“Here lie our brothers who gave their lives so that the Nazis would not trample our land,” said the leader of the republic, Alexander Zakharchenko.

The event was attended by - according to the most conservative estimates - more than 20 thousand people. Immediately before the celebration itself, there was a very touching moment: when people who came to the mound gathered in anticipation of a concert and speech by the leadership of the republic, WWII veterans were invited to places of honor. These elderly but courageous heroes were greeted by thousands of people with applause and shouts: “Thank you for the Victory!”
In honor of the veterans and guests, a concert was given, in which the best artists of the republic took part, after which the head of the DPR took the stage.
Zakharchenko thanked the veterans for their feat and for the Victory. At the end of his speech, he proposed to honor the memory of the fallen heroes of the Great Patriotic War and the battles in Donbass in 2014-2015 with a minute of silence.
Zakharchenko also awarded the militia fighters. The soldiers were awarded the 3rd and 4th degree St. George Crosses: “Until this moment, we did not have an official statutory phrase for military personnel nominated for awards. From this day on, I am introducing the following statutory phrase: “I serve the Donetsk People’s Republic,” Zakharchenko said.
The memorial complex on the Saur-Mogila mound opened in 1967. As a result of fierce fighting in August 2014, the monument was seriously damaged. The DPR authorities are planning large-scale restoration work.
