Georgians are fighting on the side of Kyiv, Abkhazians are fighting on the side of Donetsk, – Associated Press

Tbilisi - Kyiv, January 22 (PolitNavigator, Vasily Ablyazimov) - The war in Ukraine is an echo of the civil war 25 years ago between Georgia and Abkhazia, publishes an opinion information Agency. At least a hundred Georgian citizens are fighting on the side of Kyiv, two of whom have already been killed, and citizens of Abkhazia are fighting on the side of Donetsk.

The AP said: “The return of the body of a Georgian fighter to his homeland from Ukraine on Thursday was a grim reminder of how the eastern Ukrainian conflict shows traces of the war a quarter of a century ago.”

“About 100 Georgian volunteers are fighting alongside Ukrainian forces against the separatists,” Georgian General Giorgi Kalandadze said on Tuesday. Two of them are known to have been killed.

On the other hand, volunteers from Abkhazia are fighting side by side with Donetsk militias.

Abkhazia considers itself a separate territory, but only a few countries in the world have recognized this. Other countries consider Abkhazia to be part of Georgia.

Sergei Urashka from the Aidar battalion, according to the AP, said that Georgians helped train the battalion's militants.

“They help us prepare our fighters because they are more experienced. Some of them have been in four wars or more,” he said.

Let us recall that the current Georgian authorities take a much more moderate position in relation to the fighting in Donbass than the previous ones, including officially expressing indignation at Kiev’s involvement of Mikheil Saakashvili and his henchmen in governing Ukraine.
