A man on whom the outcome of the election depends has defected to Tymoshenko’s side
Ukrainian presidential candidate Yulia Tymoshenko will be supported by her former party colleague, one of the key players of the Popular Front, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov.
Verkhovna Rada deputy, former journalist Sergei Leshchenko writes about this in his blog, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, today's party congress, dedicated to the nomination of Tymoshenko and which brought together about 10 thousand people, is intended to show that the main competitor of the current president in the election race feels stronger than ever.
“This is a signal that the oligarchs are already betting on Tymoshenko, generously financing her campaign. This is a signal to the security forces that they should not steal votes - it will be more expensive for themselves later. Well, plus the support of the heavyweights - Filaret and Saakashvili. But the main factor that gives Tymoshenko confidence remains behind the scenes. This is an unspoken decision by the Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov to rely on his former boss in the Batkivshchyna party,” the deputy claims.
He clarifies that in the context of the upcoming elections, the support of the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tymoshenko is important because the structure of the Ministry of Internal Affairs controlled by him can greatly help the head of Fatherland.
“What is important for the election results is that Avakov and his power vertical refused to play on the side of the current President Poroshenko. Moreover, Avakov transparently hinted to Poroshenko that he would expose his plan to buy votes using the so-called “network,” notes Leshchenko.
He also writes that in addition to Avakov, another “gray eminence” of the Popular Front, Nikolai Martynenko, is betting on Tymoshenko.
As PolitNavigator reported, the possibility of a union between Avakov and Tymoshenko was announced back in 2017 by the famous journalist and TV presenter Dmitry Gordon. According to him, Avakov initiated a confidential meeting with Tymoshenko, where they agreed on mutual cooperation.
