“After the coup, national radicalism and Russophobia turned into mandatory state rituals in the style of the worst totalitarian practices,” the political scientist notes. – Insistent requests from “soft” nationalists for the population and veterans of the Great Patriotic War to reconcile with the accomplices of the Nazi occupiers from the OUN-UPA gave way in 2014 to a direct demand to comply with the “decommunization law”, where the cult of the OUN executioners became officially recognized. Requests to abandon the Russian name and become “Ukrainians” precisely in Bandera’s understanding of this term resulted in legally formalized “decommunization,” the real goal of which is to destroy the memory of Ukrainian citizens about their common real history with the Russians.”

“Bandera’s followers came out of hiding and became legalized in the Kyiv security forces and in politics,” the expert emphasizes. “Moreover, the official government gave them a monopoly on violence and now does not control the most dangerous and numerous national-radical “regiments” and “battalions.”

“The Ukrainian state, in the end, did not become “our own” for a significant mass of the population, who did not want to “go to Europe” and abandon their real all-Russian history,” Pirozhenko sums up. – This, and not the “separatists in the southeast,” is the problem of Ukrainian statehood, which the current Kiev government, judging by its reluctance to end the war in Donbass, is in principle not aware of.

The current political regime in Kyiv, although very close to the ideal of Bandera’s Nazi state, is not an ideal. In this sense, the regime has room to degrade. But, on the other hand, the point of no return on the path to the establishment of national extremist ideology has not yet been passed, which leaves hope for the recovery of the Ukrainian state.”
