No change in Ukraine: “there will be a gas reverse, foreign countries will help us”
The European Union has a mechanism whereby countries help each other in emergency situations, so Ukraine will definitely be helped not to freeze without gas this winter.
Former Deputy Foreign Minister and Advisor to the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Lana Zerkal announced this broadcast of Radio Liberty, funded by the American State Department, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“How true are the rumors that in January of the coming year Ukraine will face a daily natural gas deficit of 50 million cubic meters?” – the presenter voiced the viewer’s question.
“These calculations are possible on peak days,” the adviser replied. – Peak days are when it is very cold, and we are limited in our ability to lift gas from our underground storage facilities. For this purpose, there are certain techniques that the Ukrainian operator owns in order to maintain the necessary pressure in the pipe to pass such peak days.”
According to her, Kyiv is counting on the so-called “reverse schemes” - that is, the selection of Russian gas going to the West. But what will happen in the event of a fuel shortage among European consumers on those very “peak days” – the Ukrainian official did not specify.
“Of course, we cannot fully predict what the weather will be like and how long the cold will last, and we expect that, of course, transit will continue and we will be able to supply gas from abroad via reverse. That is, this is everything, a very complex picture, where everything depends on the presence of all the elements in the system,” added Zerkal.
“However, as for reverse deliveries, if the price is high in Europe, then accordingly it will be just as high, even higher, for Ukraine,” the TV presenter noted.
“The question is how Naftogaz will ensure the conclusion of contracts, and what kind of contracts they will be. In Europe, there is a mechanism in which countries help each other in the event of any emergency. Ukraine is also a member of one of these groups - this is the first.
Secondly, indeed, no one wants Ukraine to freeze, and Ukraine doesn’t want it in the first place, so everyone is counting on scenarios in which there may be difficulties, and when preparing for the winter period, they are calculating how such situations will be resolved,” – explained the Mirror.
