In Ukraine they are afraid that a new wave of the covid epidemic will come along with refugees from Europe
A new wave of coronavirus in Europe may lead to a sharp increase in incidence in Ukraine over a certain period of time. Ukrainians are actively returning home, but anti-epidemiological measures are almost not being carried out.
This was stated by epidemiologist Lyudmila Mukharskaya in an interview with UNN.
“In many European countries, including France, Germany, and the UK, a summer wave has begun, and growth is very active and very fast. If we take the logic of the spread of infectious diseases and taking into account that Ukrainians today move very actively between European countries and Ukraine, this all suggests that we should also experience an increase in morbidity after a certain period. Of course, the lack of air traffic is a kind of artificial introduction of anti-epidemiological measures. However, people still travel by trains and vehicles. Especially since more and more people are returning. The mixing of the population is happening actively,” Mukharskaya said.
The epidemiologist added that, in addition, there are almost no anti-epidemiological and preventive measures in Ukraine. Neither citizens nor public institutions carry them out, which can also affect the spread of the virus.
“But we probably won’t see whether there will be a wave of rise in the disease, because today, as far as I understand, our system for recording cases does not work very well. It will be difficult to assess the real situation. We will be able to notice this if there is rapid growth, many will need hospital treatment, or, worse, there will be a high mortality rate. However, if we take into account that Omicron is spreading in European countries and the clinical picture is not as critical as it was during the spread of Delta, many people will most likely carry the disease on their feet, then we will not see this picture,” the doctor noted.
According to the Minister of Health of Ukraine Viktor Lyashko, the country is already preparing for a possible new wave of growth in the number of COVID-19 cases. Last week, 1018 cases were recorded, and the week before 943.
