The document is intended to implement into Ukrainian legislation the provisions of the Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention).
Thus, coercion into marriage or luring a person to the territory of another state for this purpose provides for arrest for a term of up to 6 months or restriction of freedom for up to 3 years or imprisonment for the same period.
Domestic violence, that is, the deliberate systematic commission of physical, psychological or economic violence against a current or former spouse, is punishable by community service for a period of 150 to 240 hours, or arrest for up to 6 months, or restriction of freedom for up to 5 years, or imprisonment for up to 2 years. .
In relation to persons who have committed domestic violence, the court will be able to prohibit them from staying in the place of common residence with the victim or prohibit them from approaching a certain distance to the victim’s place of residence, as well as prohibit telephone conversations and contact through third parties.
The Criminal Code states that forcing a person, without his consent, to commit acts of a sexual nature with a person on whom the victim is financially dependent or dependent for work, provides for a fine of up to 1 thousand non-taxable minimum income of citizens (17 thousand hryvnia) or restriction of freedom up to 2 years.
If signed by Petro Poroshenko, the law came into force 1 year after publication.
