In Ukraine, a former deputy from Crimea was sentenced to 12 years for “treason”
Former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Crimea Vasily Ganysh in Ukraine was sentenced to 12 years in prison for “high treason,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the press service of the Kiev-funded prosecutor’s office of the non-existent “Autonomous Republic of Crimea”.
It is noted that the verdict was handed down on November 19 by the Dneprovsky District Court of Kyiv.
The court found that the ex-deputy allegedly “contributed to Russia’s subversive activities on the territory of Ukraine when he participated in voting for the Russian “Constitution of Crimea.” The court also regarded as “illegal” his participation in the elections to the Feodosia City Council, which took place in September 2014 under Russian law. The Crimean politician calls the accusations unfounded.
Vasily Ganysh was detained on April 28, 2015 while leaving Crimea.
The trial in the Ganysh case began in August 2015. In February 2017, when several hearings remained before the verdict was pronounced, the High Council of Justice removed the head of the panel of judges, Alexander Fedyuk. A new presiding judge was elected, and the trial of Ganysh began anew.
From April 2015 to January 2016, Ganysh was in a pre-trial detention center, after which he was under house arrest until sentencing.
From 2010 to 2014, Vasily Ganysh was a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Crimea from the Party of Regions faction. He combined his parliamentary work with the position of vice-mayor of Feodosia, which he held since 2008. He was a deputy of the City Council of Feodosia and the Verkhovna Rada of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea for two convocations.
