Lawlessness reigns in Ukraine - the UN demands that the murderers of Odessa residents be punished
Over the past five months, nine cases of attacks on journalists have been recorded in Ukraine, with one of the cases resulting in death.
Matilda Bogner, a representative of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, stated this during a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Since May 16, we have recorded 9 attacks on journalists. We were shocked by the death of Vadim Komarov on June 12, 2019 due to a brutal beating committed 6 weeks earlier. On July 20, we commemorated the death of the deceased journalist Pavel Sheremet. The culprits remain at large to this day.
On July 30, members of far-right groups carried out a brutal attack on the office of a news agency in Kyiv, injuring three workers, one of whom was hospitalized. We call for a prompt investigation into these attacks. As long as impunity prevails, we can expect more attacks, and a chilling effect that leads to self-censorship and a narrowing of freedom of speech,” Bogner said indignantly.
She also called on the new Ukrainian government to find and punish those responsible for the crimes of 2014.
“Previous cases of serious violations must be investigated. Five years later, the families are still awaiting justice. Families of those who died a terrible death on the Maidan and in Odessa in May 2014. Investigations must continue and proceedings must be completed promptly,” the representative of the UN mission urged.
