Border Guard Day is being decommunized in Ukraine so as not to celebrate it together with Russia
As part of “parting with the shameful imperial past,” the State Border Service of Ukraine proposes to establish a new Border Guard Day, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by assistant to the head of the department Oleg Slobodyan.
According to him, one option is April 30.
“The issue of a new date is being discussed in both a historical and political context. There are several options. One of them is April 30, the day when 100 years ago Ukrainian troops, after bloody battles, installed state symbols on the border with the Russian Federation,” Slobodyan said.
In his opinion, the decision will be agreed upon in the near future.
According to the tradition established back in Soviet times, Border Guard Day in Ukraine is celebrated on May 28. At the same time, the current authorities refuse continuity with the USSR Border Troops and instead raise a new date on the shield. In particular, in 2018, the State Border Service celebrates the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Border Guard Corps of the Ukrainian People's Republic that existed in 1917-1918.
Previously, the Highly Mobile Airborne Troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were renamed the Air Assault Troops, and also decommunized Paratrooper’s Day, moving the celebration from August 2 to November 21.
