In Ukraine they are thinking about what to do with the only leper colony in the country
There are no plans yet to close or transform the only Ukrainian leper colony, which is located in the village of Kuchurgan, Razdelnyansky district, Odessa region.
This was reported by a member of the expert group in the field of “Dermatovenerology, pediatric dermatovenerology” of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Professor Igor Svistunov, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
“There is no official information on the closure (transformation) of the State Institution “Ukrainian Leper Colony of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine” and, as far as I know, such a measure is not planned,” he said.
According to the Ministry of Health, now in Ukraine 6 people are sick with leprosy.
Earlier in early October last year and. O. Minister of Health Ulyana Suprun wrote on her Facebook page that now the Ukrainian leper colony is no longer required to perform the functions that were assigned to it decades ago.
“Now it (the leper colony in the Odessa region - ed.) exists rather as a sanatorium, which is in a very neglected state... We have inherited many medical institutions that have not changed with the world and no longer fulfill their purpose,” she noted.
According to her, the status of these medical institutions should be reviewed, and the old forms of care should be changed.
