Ukraine is preparing for winter without gas
If the transit of Russian gas completely stops in winter, then Ukraine will not be able to fill its GTS with reverse gas from Europe and meet its gas needs.
Executive Director of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine Yuriy Vitrenko stated this on air on the skrypin.ua channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Based on the experience of 2009, when gas supplies to Ukraine were also interrupted, and, accordingly, transit was interrupted, gas did not flow from Russian territory at all. The entire system was set in reverse, that is, gas was pumped not from east to west, but vice versa. The system withstood these loads, but the Bar compressor station has been operating in extreme mode in recent days. She probably wouldn't have lasted a couple more days. And it is key for gas supplies to the eastern region, for example, to Mariupol,” Vitrenko said.
He also noted that not all EU gas reverse capacity is continuous.
“Half of the capacity from Slovakia is continuous, that is, from Slovakia, our main destination, we will receive half as much gas. This means that we must prepare for the heating season now. We need to pump more gas underground. Because in winter there simply won’t be enough pipeline capacity from Slovakia to meet all of Ukraine’s needs for imported gas,” the official concluded.
