“In recent days, Strana journalists have been receiving information from various sources in the security forces of Ukraine about provocations that are being prepared against our publication.
In particular, there is information that the SBU intends to organize a mask show in the editorial office of “Strana” in the near future. In addition, according to received data, the SBU is rapidly fabricating criminal cases in order to arrest the leaders of the online newspaper “Strana”. Dozens of people have already been interrogated in these cases, from whom, during many hours of interrogation, they are trying to extract testimony against the editor-in-chief of “Strana” Igor Guzhva.
The editors of “Strana” consider these actions as an attempt to paralyze the work of our publication in order to prevent the emergence of new high-profile materials about corruption in the highest echelons of power.
Let us note that over the past year, “Strana” published many high-profile articles that caused dissatisfaction among the state leadership. In particular, we are talking about a report from the Lipetsk Roshen factory, an investigation into paid bloggers working on social networks in favor of the authorities, a series of publications on corruption exposures of People’s Deputy Alexander Onishchenko, and articles about the systemic pressure of the authorities on the Ukrainian media.
Our journalists have already faced increased attention from security services. In particular, SBU representatives searched the belongings of Strana deputy editor-in-chief Svetlana Kryukova at the Boryspil airport in search of some kind of compromising information on the leadership of Ukraine.
The editorial board of “Strana” demands that President Petro Poroshenko and the head of the SBU Vasily Gritsak stop provocations against “Strana” and calls on the authorities to build relations with the media on the basis of a civilized dialogue.
The editor-in-chief of the online newspaper “Strana” Igor Guzhva states that the publication is ready to work in any situation, regardless of the degree of pressure.
“All attempts to intimidate the editors and me personally with hastily fabricated criminal cases are pointless,” says Igor Guzhva. – We will not stop our work and will not change our position as an independent and objective media. Apart from another international shame and discrediting of Ukraine, the planned mask shows and arrests will not give anything to the authorities.”
“Strana” will inform the public in as much detail as possible about all the actions that the authorities are taking against our editorial office, as well as about the customers and perpetrators of these provocations,” the message says.
