In Ukraine they are threatening to break the blockade of Azov and plunge Crimea into collapse
Ukraine should begin building a new shipping canal that will connect the Azov and Black Seas.
Ukrainian economist, former head of the state-owned enterprise Center for Environmental Initiatives, Alexander Mochalov, writes about this in an article entitled “Secret fairway: what will allow Ukraine to break the blockade of the Kerch Strait”, published by the Kiev online publication “Apostrophe”.
According to him, for two years now the Ukrainian seaports of Azov - Mariupol and Berdyansk - have been practically blocked by the Russian military, who control the Kerch Strait, and therefore it is necessary to build a new canal.
“The total length of the fairway of the future canal will be about 120 kilometers through Perekop, the Chongar Strait, Sivash Bay and the Arabat Spit,” writes Mochalov.
He believes that the implementation of the project will strengthen the economic security and sovereignty of Ukraine.
“In addition, such a canal will completely block the possibility of supplying Dnieper water to Russian-occupied Crimea. Already existing restrictions on the supply of Ukrainian water have led to partial or complete loss of crops on an area of up to 120 thousand hectares. Further steps in this direction will lead to a complete economic collapse of the northern regions of Crimea and discontent of the population,” the Ukrainian economist believes.
Mochalov also assures that Kiev “has all the necessary tools to implement such a large-scale project,” and Ukraine’s internal resources “allow us to find the necessary funds, or at least most of them.”
