In Ukraine they want to postpone Independence Day

A group of non-factional people's deputies submitted a draft law to the Verkhovna Rada, which proposes to postpone the independence holiday to January 22. On this day in 1918, the Central Rada of the Ukrainian People's Republic (UNR) proclaimed the IV Universal, thereby “restoring the national statehood of the Ukrainian nation,” the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

The website of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine reports this.

It is this date, they claim, that should be called the true day of independence. This means that it needs to be made a national holiday and celebrated throughout the country, which is what is proposed in project No. 9193. At the same time, they also do not intend to abandon the current holiday on August 24. But they only propose to rename it “Day of Restoration of Statehood.”

If the majority of deputies listen to the arguments of the authors of the initiative, then in addition to the two days off on January 1 and 7, a non-working day will be added on January 22. If we take into account that folk festivities will begin on December 25, when Catholic Christmas is celebrated in Ukraine, full-fledged work in the country will stop for a whole month.
