In Ukraine they want to lift the “blockade” of the Azov Sea by Russia with the help of the countries of the Caspian basin.
Such an unexpected proposal was made by a retired colonel, ex-officer of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleg Zhdanov on the air of the 112 Ukraine TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, it is necessary to terminate the existing agreement between Ukraine and the Russian Federation on the status of the Sea of Azov and convince the countries of the Caspian basin to establish transit through Azov.
“In fact, today we do not control the Sea of Azov, but judging by the fact that there are no complaints from shipowners about violations of international maritime law, it means that Russia is acting within the framework of international treaties. The only thing we can rely on is that we need to gather a large round table of the countries of the Caspian basin. The fact is that the presence of the Volga-Don Canal obliges Russia and Ukraine to consider the Sea of Azov not internal, as it is now according to the agreement between our countries, but semi-enclosed,” the expert said.
“Russia is obliged to provide transit for the countries of the Caspian basin to exit from the Caspian Sea to the world ocean and back,” Zhdanov believes. – This is our key, this is the way out of the deadlock. It is necessary to denounce the agreement, gather a large round table of the countries of the Caspian basin and conclude a normal agreement on the joint use of the semi-enclosed Sea of Azov,” Zhdanov said.
