In Ukraine they want to sink Russian ships from land
The so-called “mosquito fleet,” which Kiev periodically tries to scare Russia with, does not have real combat potential.
Ukrainian military expert, director of the information and consulting company Defense Express Sergei Zgurets spoke about this in an interview with the Kyiv online publication “Apostrophe”.
He noted that the construction of large-class ships in Ukraine is being implemented very slowly, and therefore it is necessary to launch small armored artillery boats of the Gyurza type and landing assault boats of the Centaur type, about which reported the other day Commander of the Ukrainian Naval Forces, Vice Admiral Igor Voronchenko.
At the same time, Zgurets calls not to overestimate the military significance of these boats.
“Russian landing boats can be destroyed from land, so a defense strategy can be built without the use of small armored missile boats. But Centaur-type boats will not fight with landing ships and other enemy ships, since their purpose is to support raid operations close to land, landing an amphibious or other group. Any fleet concept must be aimed at countering specific threats.
If we admit that in reality boats of the “Gyurza” type do not have sufficient speed and the enemy can easily destroy them, then no matter how many boats we build, their short combat cycle actually eliminates the concept of a “mosquito fleet”. In my understanding, such a fleet is ships that have small dimensions, speed that does not allow the enemy to destroy them, and missile weapons that can hit ships with much greater firepower and displacement. This is possible if our missile boats are equipped with missile weapons that are capable of sinking Russian warships,” the expert said.
He added that currently Ukrainian boats are equipped only with grenade launchers and cannons with low accuracy, adding that “it would be a significant exaggeration to talk about the combat potential of these ships as the basis of the “mosquito fleet.”
“Under these conditions, the concept of building a fleet should include, first of all, asymmetric measures for the use of guided missile weapons, which can be placed in the format of mobile coastal missile systems, as well as equipping aircraft carriers such as Su-27 fighters and promising missile boats of the Lan type with missile weapons “, on which anti-ship missiles of the Neptune type can be installed,” summarized Zgurets.
