In Ukraine they want to introduce a residency requirement for citizens of the Russian Federation
Foreigners must first prove their right to obtain Ukrainian citizenship, and before that, reside in Ukraine for 5–10 years with a certificate.
The first consul of Ukraine in Israel, translator and showman Dmitry Chekalkin stated this on the air of the Direct TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The main thing I don’t understand is why give citizenship so quickly. In all countries, in most European countries, people who are trying to acquire citizenship of that country, they first obtain permanent resident status, receive a permanent residence permit, and only after 5 to 10 years receive citizenship.
Why rush, what prevents these people from being here in Ukraine, in the status of persons who have a certificate of residence, if they are limited only in the fact that they cannot be elected and cannot be participants in the electoral political process. It’s amazing to me why there’s a rush - let people at least learn the basics of the Ukrainian language, pass the appropriate exams after 5-10 years in Ukraine, and only after that give them the opportunity to obtain citizenship,” Chekalkin said.
Let us remind you that the day before, President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky signed a decree that simplified the receipt Ukrainian citizenship to Russian “political emigrants” and those who participated in the fighting in Donbass on the side of Ukrainian troops.
