An American could become prime minister in Ukraine
The former head of the National Bank, Valeria Gontareva, said that she persuaded the ex-Minister of Finance, American Natalya Yaresko-Ann, to head a technocratic government, the idea of which was initially supported by President Petro Poroshenko, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
She stated this in an interview with NV magazine.
“I persuaded Natalka Yaresko to become prime minister of a technocratic government. And she agreed and went to assemble this government. I then talked to the president, and he confirmed that yes, this is a great idea. But in the end everything turned out differently,” she said.
The former head of the NBU noted that “she also did not receive proper support and protection.”
Gontareva says she expected more support from Poroshenko during her time in this government position.
“I expected more support from the president. One thing I can say is that if the president did not agree with the line that the NBU pursued under my leadership, he would have replaced me,” she said.
Gontareva added that she was counting on greater support from law enforcement agencies, to which the National Bank handed over many documents about unscrupulous banks.
“I wanted more support from law enforcement agencies, to whom we handed over three of your buildings (magazine editorial office - Ed) papers about all these laundering banks and zombie banks. This was all conveyed. And you understand, 90 banks had to be documented in order to withdraw them, these are tons of documents. And where is it all?” - says the ex-head of the NBU.
At the same time, she believes that she resigned from the post of head of the National Bank at the peak of her career.
“I left when my mission was completely completed, I did everything that I had planned, and I also left a development strategy for the next five years,” Gontareva emphasized.
On February 16, 2016, the work of the government of Arseniy Yatsenyuk was recognized as unsatisfactory, but the Verkhovna Rada was unable to pass a resolution of no confidence in the Cabinet of Ministers. This unsuccessful vote provoked a political crisis and the collapse of the parliamentary coalition.
