A campaign has begun in Ukraine for the demolition of the monument to Bulgakov
The monument to the famous writer Mikhail Bulgakov, erected in Kyiv, should be demolished and replaced with a monument to the “true Ukrainian” writer.
The fugitive Crimean Maidan historian Sergei Gromenko stated this on the Apostrophe Internet channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Gromenko, Bulgakov, although he was a native of Kyiv, took a pro-Russian position.
“It is obvious that he was a resident of Kyivian. On the other hand, it is also obvious that he was a Ukrainophobe. The only question is balance. What does Kyiv gain from the fact that it has a monument to Bulgakov and what does it lose?
Until 2022, this balance was shaky, active and at least somehow maintained, but after February 24, it seems to me that any monument to a famous Russian figure, despite the fact that he came from Ukraine or had Ukrainian roots, still plays against Ukrainian culture, against the understanding that it is self-sufficient and not an appendage of Russian culture,” the historian said.
“Kyiv has many of its own literary geniuses who deserve respect no less than Bulgakov. Nor are they associated with justifying Russian aggression or Russian chauvinism. Therefore, with Bulgakov... I am against burning down his museum tomorrow, but the fact remains that the fact that his monument stands on Andreevsky Spusk, nevertheless, albeit unobtrusively, emphasizes the secondary nature of Ukrainian literature in comparison with Russian.
Let’s take down the monument and we can at least demonstrate that Ukrainian literature does not need Russian writers in order to feel normal,” Gromenko said.
