A conflict similar to the war in Northern Ireland begins in Ukraine
By creating another church structure, Petro Poroshenko’s regime only deepened the split in Ukrainian society - the situation began to resemble Northern Ireland, where a bloody conflict between Catholics and Protestants has been going on for decades.
Ruslan Bortnik, director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The risk of religious conflict in Ukraine, both behind the scenes and public, has increased to an extreme degree. After the tomos is granted, the struggle for churches and monasteries will intensify... The confrontation between people at the everyday level will become extremely intensified. In addition to the language of history and war, another line of dividing Ukrainians will be added – religious.
“Unnoticed by us, we are turning into Northern Ireland, where there are very strict social boundaries between Protestants and Catholics, which are quite difficult to cross even at the everyday level,” he said.
“Of course, after the church receives the tomos, having state support, support from right-wing radicals, a struggle will unfold for these symbolic places - Lavras, monasteries, which attract a large number of parishioners, which are profitable from the point of view of resources. Therefore, the struggle will begin, and this, unfortunately, is just the beginning. Especially when the Rada tries to pass new laws, change the name of the UOC to “ROC in Ukraine,” Bortnik added.
