In Ukraine, the new anti-Russian declaration of the State Department was called historic
The US State Department has issued a declaration of non-recognition of the reunification of Crimea with Russia.
The document was signed by Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The declaration states that the territory of Crimea was “seized by force” and this is nothing more than a “violation of international law.” The text of the document notes that the United States does not recognize Russia’s sovereignty over Crimea, just as it did not recognize the entry into the USSR of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
In Ukraine, the adopted document has already been declared “overcome.” Thus, Verkhovna Rada deputy Anna Gopko stated in her blog that Washington adopted a “historic declaration.”
“What is important for Ukraine is the consolidated position of the West in repelling the armed aggression of the Russian Federation and restoring the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, joint actions to increase pressure, introduce new economic sanctions and free our citizens. The Russian Federation is trying in every possible way to destroy the solidarity and unity of the West and to play on pragmatic interests. Therefore, we need unity, real further changes, continued reforms in the security and defense sector, economic growth and innovation. In a word, work with inspiration for Ukraine, without whining, every day. Believe and not be afraid to fight,” Gopko wrote.
Former Ukrainian journalist Miroslava Gongadze, who works in Washington, supported her enthusiasm.
“Remember this day. The Crimean Declaration does not officially recognize the occupation of Crimea. A similar declaration was adopted in the United States in 1940 on non-recognition of the occupation of the Baltic countries. It may take a long time, but Crimea will be Ukrainian,” dreams the widow of ex-editor of Ukrayinska Pravda Georgy Gongadze.
Meanwhile, Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov, former chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, emphasizes in his blog that no declarations will change the state of affairs and will not be able to influence the current status of Crimea.
“Pompeo’s statement on Crimea has no significance either for the status of Crimea within the Russian Federation or for Russia-US relations. The US position is known. The statement is aimed at reducing the intensity of criticism of Trump in the United States after Helsinki and strengthening the position of the Western alliance, where many are already inclined to forget about Crimea,” Pushkov emphasized.
