Political scientist Yuri Romanenko said this on air on the Pryamoy TV channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The neglect of human capital has led to the fact that our vaunted education system has turned into a dud. If in the early 90s we had 350 thousand engineers who could support this whole Soviet colossus, today there are only 50 thousand of them left. In order to maintain these basic functions in the form of the decaying infrastructure that we have, not to mention seriously developing something, this requires the appearance of people. But the education system is not being transformed. Moreover, people do not understand why physics and mathematics are needed. Last year, the physical and technical department at Odessa University was closed because there were no applicants,” Romanenko said.
