Ukraine has finally banned its own cognac, champagne and parmesan
The Verkhovna Rada adopted in the second reading and in general a bill on improving the legal protection of geographical indications, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The corresponding decision was supported by 277 deputies, reports the Verkhovna Rada website.
During the preparation of the bill, 85 proposals were received, 82 of which were taken into account.
It is noted that this bill is part of Ukraine’s obligations under the association agreement with the EU. It must ensure the protection of foreign geographical indications and create grounds for the creation of such indications in Ukraine.
“The purpose of the adoption of the draft law is to ensure the fulfillment of Ukraine’s obligations in the field of European integration in terms of harmonizing the requirements of the current legislation on the protection of rights to geographical indications with EU law,” says the explanatory note to the bill.
A geographical indication is a name or designation identifying a product as originating in a particular territory, country, region or locality and having a special quality, reputation and other important characteristics that are substantially attributable to its geographical origin.
