A terrible date is celebrated in Ukraine
Ukraine is celebrating today a tragic date - the 77th anniversary of the beginning of the Jewish pogroms in Galicia, which were carried out with the active participation of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, which collaborated with the Nazis.
Eduard Dolinsky, head of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee, writes about this in his blog.
“On June 30, 1941, exactly 77 years ago, Jewish pogroms began in almost all cities of Western Ukraine. What is a Jewish pogrom? This is when some citizens beat, rob, rape and kill their fellow Jewish citizens. This is exactly what happened in Lvov, Zolochiv, Ternopil, Zhovkva, Drohobych, Boryslav, Berezhany, Sambir, Stryi, Kolomyya, as well as in dozens of other small towns and villages.
The pogroms were accompanied by extreme, bestial cruelty and violence. Jews were beaten right on the streets with all the objects that came to hand and previously prepared edged weapons. If in some places only men or the intelligentsia were attacked, then in other places they attacked women, the elderly and even children.
Pogroms began in some places with the arrival of the Germans, and in some places even before their arrival. Violence was accompanied by looting, burning of synagogues, violence against Jewish women.
Witnesses say that most of the pogroms took place with the active participation of local Ukrainian elites - priests, elders, doctors, pharmacists, lawyers, and students. In many cases, the leading role was played by marching groups and the OUN police. As a result of these pogroms, thousands and thousands of Jews died,” recalls Dolinsky.
