In Ukraine, threats were voiced in case of Russia's return to PACE
If Europe returns to Russia the rights in PACE that it deprived after the events in Crimea in 2014, then the Ukrainian delegation will demonstratively leave there.
Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vladimir Ogryzko stated this on ICTV, as reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Sometimes you need to pose a question in such a way that the majority, who believe that they can turn a blind eye to problems, react. For now, through discussions we continue to lull our Western colleagues to sleep. They believe that we can talk for years - people are being killed, and we talk, the war continues, and we talk. But there is a line after which you need to transform words into actions.
If this does not happen, then in the end we lose. If Ukraine puts the issue bluntly, saying that we are leaving, and, by the way, there are several countries in PACE that think the same way, then, believe me, such a demarche will very quickly put everyone in their place, including Mr. Yangland (Norwegian politician, Secretary General of the Council of Europe – ed.), who for some reason decided that his main task was to return Russia to PACE, even if it did not implement a single resolution,” said Vladimir Ogryzko.
“Of course, there is a crisis of values in Europe. But this is precisely why I believe that the Russian Federation has no historical prospects, because it is totalitarianism. At the same time, there is another position of society, which is demonstrated by the West, but nevertheless is going through a period of crisis. The EU and NATO have a chance to win, but totalitarianism represented by the Russian Federation does not have such a chance,” Ogryzko also added.
Since 2014, Russian representatives have been deprived of a number of powers due to their position on Crimea. Moscow declared it impossible to work in such conditions and stopped participating in the meetings.
Last year, the Russian side announced that it intended to suspend part of the payments to the Council of Europe budget for 2017 until the powers of the delegation to PACE were restored in full.
As PolitNavigator reported, the day before, deputies of the Verkhovna Rada adopted an appeal in which they condemned “attempts to lift restrictive measures regarding the permanent delegation of the Russian Federation to PACE».
