In Ukraine, faith in Ukrainian Crimea is falling
Most of all, residents of the western and central regions of the country want the return of Crimea to Ukraine.
This is evidenced by data from a sociological survey conducted by the Democratic Initiatives Foundation, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The number of Ukrainian citizens living in the western regions who want to return Crimea is about 80%. At the same time, in the east, only slightly more than 40% of respondents support the reintegration of the peninsula.
“The proportion of citizens who believe that Crimea should remain part of Ukraine is 70% on average for the country. Most of the citizens who believe that Crimea should be part of Ukraine are part of the western and central region. In these regions, about 80% of citizens believe that Crimea should be part of Ukraine,” foundation expert Sergei Shapovalov said during a round table in Kyiv.
At the same time, he drew attention to the regional features recorded during the study.
“For example, in the southern region and Donbass the idea that Crimea belongs to Ukraine is less common and amounts to 55%. Also in the eastern region, the idea that Crimea belongs to Ukraine is only 41%,” the expert said.
At the same time, he emphasized that the number of those who believe in the reality of the return of the peninsula is invariably falling.
“Compared to 54% in 16, this year 48% of Ukrainians believe that Crimea will return to Ukraine. And only 5% of Ukrainian citizens said that Crimea could be returned in the near future,” the sociologist pointed out.
The expert also noted that despite the desire to return Crimea, Ukrainians are not ready for the resumption of social payments and subsidies from the central budget there.
“The majority of society simultaneously wants the return of Crimea and believes that Crimea will return to Ukraine, and at the same time, the majority of society is not ready for the resumption of government subsidies from the state budget to Crimea,” Shapovalov concluded.
Previously famous Lviv TV presenter Ostap Drozdov declared the need to re-establish Ukraine within new boundaries.
